Two Grand Slam champions square off in a marquee third-round match today in the Rod Laver Arena. Justine Henin, whose sterling play so far suggests that her elbow woes are behind her, faces Svetlana Kuznetsova in a match that could easily be a semifinal.While Henin has enjoyed great success in previous years at the Australian Open, winning the event twice and reaching two finals, Kuznetsova has historically started the year slowly, reaching the quarterfinals only twice in her previous eight visits to Melbourne.
Henin leads the rivalry, having won 16 of 18 previous meetings, including two Grand Slam finals in 2006 and 2007. With her explosive, attacking all-court game, Henin always seems to take the play to Kuznetsova, who seems uncertain tactically against the diminutive Belgian. Although small in stature, Henin wields a racket like Lisbeth Salander handles a Taser.
