In three short seasons after winning the Fiesta Bowl in January 2002 he watched the Ducks hit what was for them rock bottom, losing the 2004 Civil War 50-21 at Oregon State to finish 5-6.It was Bellotti’s only losing season in his 14 years as head coach at Oregon and the failure prompted him to make a dramatic change, scrapping the Ducks version of the West Coast, pro-style offense for the spread-option.
The coaching staff was against it. Bellotti didn’t care. He had a vision.
