Sons of Anarchy' Season 3 Finale Recap

The current season of 'Sons of Anarchy' has gotten me thinking about secrets and lies. When are secrets the characters are carrying effective tension-builders? When is it good for the audience to know something that the characters don't and vice versa? The show's extra-long season finale caused me to ponder these topics once again.
Overall, there was a propulsive sense of forward movement in the episode, and some excellent character moments as well. However there was a twist at the end of the episode, one that both worked and didn't work.

Insight for Change

Hanukkah: “Holiday traditions vary greatly throughout the world based on religion and culture. The Jewish people celebrate a most significant holiday during the holiday season-Hanukkah. The traditions and decorations that belong to Hanukkah are highly symbolic. Hanukkah tradition states that the celebration is to begin every year on the 25th of the Hebrew month Kislev. This year it begins on Sunset December 1st to Sunset December 9th. The tradition of Hanukkah commemorates the Jews' victory over the Syrian Greeks in 165 BCE. That victory can be credited to the Jewish revolutionaries called the Maccabees. In the process of restoring Jerusalem, they found their Temple desecrated and in ruins. In order to restore it, they needed to procure ritual oil for the Temple, but could only find one day's worth-eight days of oil was needed. But a miracle occurred that first Hanukkah. The Temple lamps burned for the full eight days so that the Temple could be rededicated. Hanukkah's decorations either emerged or were adapted from this event.

U.S. Army starts using game-changing XM25 smart bullet rifle

The U.S. Army has started shipping smart bullet rifles to Afghanistan this month, and the smart aspect of the $35,000 gun should give U.S. troops an edge against any hidden enemy. The reason the XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System is classed as a smart weapon is due to the control the rifleman has over the bullets it fires. Rather than just aiming and shooting, a distance option is given before the bullet will explode. So if you have a sniper hiding behind some rocks, aim just above him and set the bullet to explode 1 meter beyond the rocks. The same is true of someone taking refuge inside a building–the bullet can enter through the window before exploding.
The distance to explosion can be adjusted 3 meters before or after the target point which is set with a laser. A processor inside each bullet is told how far to travel before exploding as it leaves the rifle.

Doughnuts to Celebrate Chanukah

Today is the first night of Chanukah.  When I was growing up, Chanukah meant potato latkes with sour cream and applesauce.  My mother would make them and then complain for days about the smell of oil from frying which lingered in the house for days.
My mother has an incredible sense of smell.  In our family, we joke that she can smell foul odours a day before they actually occur.  My childhood memories are filled with her going from room to room, sniffing and muttering, “What’s that smell?”  One of her least favorite smells was that of food cooked in oil.  She claimed that she could smell the oil for weeks afterwards.  Now I must be honest here and admit that I inherited my father’s sense of smell – that is to say,  his lack of sense of smell.  He had sinus problems and his nose malfunctioned often.

Notes on Hanukkah: The Maccabees and Zionism’s ‘invented traditions’

The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, a Hebrew word meaning “to dedicate,” is a minor Jewish festival with no Biblical source.Hanukkah is a historical holiday that commemorates the Jewish defeat of the Seleucidite Syrian Greeks in 165 BCE by a priestly family called the Maccabees. These Maccabees sought to defeat not merely the Greek occupiers, but to defeat their Jewish acolytes, the so-called “Jewish Hellenizers.”
Our rabbinic sources have not preserved any legitimate historical information for us. But the rabbis do set out the legal requirement of the holiday, a single prescription to light candles for eight nights, in the Tractate Shabbat of the Babylonian Talmud. This legal discussion, our only “official” Jewish source for the holiday, is in essence appended to a much larger discussion of the intricacies of lighting candles for the Sabbath.

The Google Rosa Parks Logo

Google is remembering the historic day when Rosa Parks refused to listen to the bus driver when she was told to give up her seat for a white passenger. Today, 55 years ago, was that day in Montgomery, Alabama. Although she wasn’t the first to make such a statement, her action on that day initiated the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Rosa Parks is well known as a African American civil rights activist and was called by the U.S. Congress “the first lady of civil rights”, and “the mother of the freedom movement”. So, although today is not her birthday – Google decided to remember the anniversary of the day she refused to move with this logo:
