Ryder Cup TV schedule 2010

What's the Ryder Cup  TV schedule for the 2010 matches? NBC televises the matches on the weekend in the United States, and has made a decision to air the Saturday matches on tape delay rather than live. Of course, in America the matches will be starting in the middle of the night - but plenty of golf fans on this side of the pond probably wish they had the option to watch live golf.
But that's just one of three days; Friday's and Sunday's matches will be available live on TV in America.

Actor Tony Curtis died

Tony Curtis, the Bronx tailor's son who became a 1950s movie heartthrob and then a respected actor with such films as "Sweet Smell of Success," "The Defiant Ones" and "Some Like It Hot," has died. He was 85.
The actor died at 9:25 p.m. MDT Wednesday at his Las Vegas area home of a cardiac arrest, Clark County Coroner Mike Murphy said Thursday.

In 1958, "The Defiant Ones" brought him an Academy Award nomination as best actor for his portrayal of a white racist escaped convict handcuffed to a black escapee, Sidney Poitier. The following year, he donned women's clothing and sparred with Marilyn Monroe in one of the most acclaimed film comedies ever, Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot."His first wife was actress Janet Leigh of "Psycho" fame; actress Jamie Leigh Curtis is their daughter.

Who Are the Nirmohi Akhara

The Allahabad High Court delivered a complex verdict in the Babri Masjid case today, dividing the sacred site into three parts – one for Muslims and two for Hindus. They had to deal in their case with a most unusual cast of characters, including the Hindu god Lord Ram himself, who was named as a party to the case by one of the (human) Hindu litigants
One third of the site will go to the Nirmohi Akhara, a group of Hindu ascetics who are devotees of none other than Lord Ram. Their name means, roughly, “Group Without Attachment.” They have given up the material world for the company of their god. They are “sadhus” – or Hindu holy men often characterized by the hermetic tendencies. They claimed in court that there is no mosque called Babri Masjid at the site in Ayodhya, nor did the Mughal commander Babur make any conquest or any occupation of territory in India. They also claimed the site is of ancient antiquity and has existed before the living memory of man. Lord Ram and his court representatives receive another third of the site.

Obviously, Bolton didn’t take that well, but didn’t fire back directly at the time.  Later, though, Bolton said he thought it was “inappropriate and disrespectful” of Tonioli to characterize his dancing as the worst ever.

Molly Norris Disappears

A week ago, a young woman disappeared, and no one really seems to care. Cartoonist Molly Norris briefly became famous last spring when she suggested, in response to self-censorship by Comedy Central over the portrayal of Muhammad on South Park, that there be an “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.” The idea went viral, and cleric Anwar al-Awlaki called  for her execution. The FBI took this threat very seriously. An agent in charge of counterterrorism, David Gomez, said the FBI was assisting Norris and others on the hit list to “effectively protect themselves and change their behavior to make themselves less of a target.” Yes, that’s where we are—the FBI is there to give cheeky Americans advice in not offending murderous Islamists. Norris quickly backed off her suggestion and said she meant no offense. That apparently was not good enough to keep her from potentially becoming the next Theo Van Gogh. So last week her former employer, the Seattle Weekly, announced that there would be no more Norris cartoons because “there is no more Molly.”

I’m not always a fan of Dunkin’ Donuts, but I’m always a fan of companies doing more to help out good charities like the Special Olympics.

As for men, maybe weightlifting shouldn’t be a priority. According to the study, women care more about faces than bodies for both short- and

The Return of Debtors’ Prisons in Louisiana

Inmate isn’t a money-making profession, which helps explain why states outlawed debtors’ prisons in the 1830s. More recently, the Supreme Court added protections for the destitute, ruling that a judge can’t revoke probation for or heap prison time on an inmate merely because he can’t afford fines or court fees. But while poverty is no longer a crime, at least not officially, two new studies suggest that the practice of locking up debtors is becoming more common. In separate efforts, the American Civil Liberties Union and Brennan Center for Justice at New York University spent a year observing court cases and interviewing hundreds of defenders, prosecutors, and the accused. The results, copies of which were released early to NEWSWEEK, show a troubling pattern of incarceration in at least 16 states, where even minor, nonviolent offenses such as speeding and loitering result in prison time for the poor.

CNN's Jon Klein Fired, Finally

Jon Klein, the oleaginous CNN chief who has led his network from failure to failure, all the while keeping up a patter of confident, self-righteous spin, was finally sacked today. This is no time to gloat ... No, wait, this is the perfect time to gloat. If you don't kick them when they're down they might get back up! .. Klein, remember, was the man who first derided bloggers  as a "guy sitting in his living room in his pajamas writing what he thinks"--this during the Dan Rather controversy, when Klein was sucking up to his old buddies at CBS.
The pajamists won that battle, and now they've won the war: at CNN, Klein completely  misread the cable news market which, thanks in part to the rise of opinionated bloggers writing what they think, now frankly rewards  frank ideological cocooning (as in the Rachel Maddow show). That's not entirely a good trend. We now have degraded, over-excited political discourse. On the other hand, we don't have Jon Klein. ...

You may also beware of my serious misgivings about what I view as NBC News’ unprecedented attack on public education in the guise of Education Nation. I so annoyed NBC News earlier this week that they had me blocked from posting on Facebook for a time. Since my social media sentence was commuted, I continue to try and correct the record on Education Nation‘s Facebook page and via Twitter.

Democrats facing steep losses

Tea Party types are not the only ones boiling mad. President Obama’s supporters are angry at a White House they think has grown insular, and at a president who’s lost his touch. The African-American woman who told Obama in a CNBC town-hall meeting this week that she was tired of defending him  expressed the searing disappointment that so many Democrats feel. It’s mind-boggling how poorly the White House has related to its friends, putting up a wall of cool and refusing to hit the panic button even as the Democrats’ congressional majorities slip away.
Obama’s backers were right during the campaign when they fretted that he wasn’t responding forcefully enough to the threat posed by Sarah Palin, who for a few nervous weeks had them worrying that John McCain had uncovered a secret weapon.

Where the Jobs Are

It’s official. The Great Recession that began in December 2007 ended in June 2009, making it the longest on record since the end of World War II. That was the news flash last week by the number crunchers at the National Bureau of Economic Research, the outfit up in Cambridge, Mass., in charge of marking such sober events. Economics is a science that is not just dismal but frequently late, meaning that even as it took more than a year to figure out that the recession was over, it will now take many more to discover definitively what caused it and, more important, to ferret out why unemployment still remains at historic highs even as the economy is growing once more.
