The SAT: Getting Mediocre Rich Kids Into College Since 1926

Perhaps to settle all doubts whether they're the union's most rabidly prejudiced state, Arizona voters last week banned the use of affirmative action in college admissions because it discriminates against white people.But for this fuzzy logic to pass muster, voters had to ignore or remain blissfully ignorant of the myriad ways the college admissions system is already skewed to favor kids who are rich, mediocre and white.
The SAT  is probably the system's most efficient instrument at creating an uneven playing field. I know this because back in high school I, a mediocre white student of privilege, was a beneficiary of the SAT.

College Football: TCU vs. Utah, Alabama vs. LSU

TCU (No. 3 BCS) meets Utah (No. 5 BCS) on CBS College Sports with nearly every marble at stake. The winner will likely finish 12-0, playing in the Rose Bowl or possibly the National Title game. Besides national ridicule the probable 11-1 loser will be invited to face a .500 Pac-10 team in the prestigious. Maaco Bowl Las Vegas. Expect both teams to unload the playbook.

Statistically, these are two of the best teams in the country. TCU is #11 in total offense and #1 in total defense for the third straight year. They have allowed 16 points combined over their last five games. Since their opener with Oregon State, the Horned Frogs have won each game by at least 17 points. Utah is 21st in total offense, but 3rd in scoring offense. They are also 6th in total defense. Though, their strength of schedule is worth noting. They have played two teams in the FEI Top 80. Both wins, over Pittsburgh and Air Force, were within five points.

Jill Clayburgh, 66, Dies Of Leukemia

Hollywood veteran Jill Clayburgh has died. She was 66. The actress, who starred opposite Burt Reynolds in 1979's "Starting Over," passed away on Friday at her home in Lakeville, Connecticut, following a long illness. Clayburgh's husband, playwright David Rabe, has revealed she suffered from chronic lymphocytic leukemia for over 20 years, reports the Associated Press.
She was nominated for two Academy Awards throughout her career, for her roles in "Starting Over" and "An Unmarried Woman," which won her the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978. Clayburgh later turned her hand to television acting, appearing in shows including "Nip/Tuck," "Law & Order" and "Ally McBeal," and more recently "Dirty Sexy Money."
